The Black Farmers Collective
The Black Farmers Collective (BFC), a nonprofit composed of socially disadvantaged farmers, in partnership with the King County Department of Natural Resources & Parks Farm Unit (KCDNRP), will provide technical assistance and outreach services to 45–65 socially disadvantaged small farms operated by ~80 producers in the three most populous counties in Washington State. BFC brings farming expertise; substantial training skills and experience; cultural competency; extensive network of relationships within BIPOC/immigrant farming communities; and significant outreach and technical assistance experience supporting new and existing BIPOC/immigrant farmers. KCDNRP already has relationships with 50 of the farms and can also provide direct services such as access to farmland leases and water. Working in tandem with KCDNRP will amplify BFC’s positive impact on these farms. BFC goals are to 1) increase participation in USDA and other programs and services through outreach and technical assistance; and 2) increase farm viability and financial success for the targeted farms, leveraging USDA and other resources. We will accomplish goals through a collaborative, culturally sensitive, peer-to-peer approach bolstered by cultural/linguistic support, providing a) virtual and in-person group training; b) customized one-on-one virtual and on-site training, consultation, and coaching; c) guides and videos to reinforce training; and d) hands-on assistance to individual farms. Specific types of training and assistance include: i) evidence-based farming practices, with an emphasis on proven regenerative farming methods; ii) relevant USDA and other farm support programs and services; iii) guidance on how to navigate application processes; and iv.) financial literacy and business development.
