The Kohala Center
For the past 12 years, The Kohala Center (TKC) has been assisting clients with determining eligibility for USDA grant and loan programs, developing proposals, and completing loan applications. One-on-one assistance is often necessary for farmers and ranchers in Hawai‘i to access USDA programs. Producers often need help with creating business plans, cash flow projections, income statements, balance sheets, writing grant applications, and completing loan applications. Through this work, TKC has developed good working relationships with USDA field office staff and personnel affiliated with other federal, state, county, and private agencies. The proposed project builds on our past success by expanding the Center’s capacity to provide technical assistance and training to farmers and ranchers in Hawai‘i and to facilitate access to USDA programs. This project will improve technical assistance and financial education related to USDA programs, with a focus on producers belonging to historically underserved groups including Hawaiian and Asian producers, women farmers, new and beginning farmers, and limited resource farmers. RCBDS will provide TA to Hawai‘i’s rural co-ops and businesses in the following areas: co-op education, group facilitation and organization, strategic project planning, business planning, market analysis, capitalization, grant writing and loan package preparation, direct microlending, financial literacy, legal document assistance, board and member training, conflict resolution, business succession, leadership, evaluation, professional networking, and referrals. Other priorities will include identifying opportunities to develop additional farmworker housing on Hawai‘i Island and continuing to assist entrepreneurs and business owners who are rebuilding following recent natural disasters and the coronavirus pandemic.
