International Rescue Committee
Despite their enormous potential to contribute to their food systems, new American farmers face critical barriers to becoming successful. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has extensive and deep experience working with these populations and running farmer training programs for the last decade and a half. The goal of the Gaining Ground project is to support 335 underserved new American farmers to gain the skills, resources, and market opportunities to expand their farm businesses. The project will deliver targeted financial training and credit access, technical assistance in agricultural production and marketing, broker relationships with local USDA service providers and landowners, and create land access and training materials that are specifically honed to the language and literacy needs of the new Americans in the project. Activities will be led by IRC staff across four locations where IRC conducts farmer training and support activities: Salt Lake County, UT, Albemarle County, VA, Sacramento County, CA, and Maricopa County, AZ.
